Atlas is a short, animated fanfare composed for six trombones. The work is driven by pulsing eighth note rhythms that build up in an extended introduction. This rhythmic theme supports the harmonic content of the piece and unfolds into legato melodies that are passed around from high to low within ensemble. Thematically, the piece is fairly limited to two melodies plus a development section. This results in a palindromic form:
Intro - A - B - Development - B - A - Coda.
